How do I write an engaging Update?

Updates are a great way to add new information to your project page and get followers to come back and engage with it again. We encourage you to post updates frequently to show community members that you want to build a relationship with them. So, what do you say?

A project Update email notification to followers

1. Make news with your title

An attention-grabbing title gets people to click from their email notification to your project page. Keep it short and snappy. It's the first thing your followers will see.

2. Pick a topical topic

Think less "There is a meeting." and more "We want to hear from you!". Good topics for updates include:

  • An announcement about an upcoming event and why people will not want to miss it.
  • A thank you to attendees after an event that lets people know what's up next.
  • A new image or two of the project or a photo of people at an event.
  • A roundup of how community comments are changing the project for the better.
  • A description of a project benefit that you couldn't fit in your page description.

Think of your updates as a quick and casual way to share news and ideas with your project followers—your built in audience.

3. What else?

Whenever you can, we'd advise that you:

  • Keep it short and sweet. As little as 1-2 sentences is enough to keep your project top of mind in the community.
  • Include an image. People connect strongly with imagery. Wide landscape-shaped images work best. The image doesn't have to be of the project, just something related that's eye catching.
  • Time your updates to sync with your schedule. Upcoming meeting? Post an update a couple of days in advance. Comment deadline? Time to post an update! Project approved or past a big milestone? Share your success!
