How do I address negativity regarding my project?

Don't worry too much about negative comments. People are bound to disagree. The beauty of the Comments section is that it gives you the buffer of time and serves as a "dress rehearsal" for in-person meetings.

1. Keep it civil

You can set the tone by responding politely and beginning with a "thank you". Simply responding at all will show the commenter that you're really listening and may soften their criticism.

2. Make them feel heard

No matter whether the commenter's point is reasonable, you can usually say that you understand their perspective and where they're coming from. That can mean a lot.

3. Try to work together

If there's an opportunity to work on a solution to the commenter's concern, go ahead and say you'll look into it! Otherwise, mention how much work you've put into designing a project that works in context of the neighborhood and that the dialogue is ongoing.

4. Gently state the facts

If the suggestion is out of scope or would make the project unfeasible, you can gently say so after expressing thanks and understanding. The truth is important.

5. Point out public benefits

If there's an opportunity to show how people will benefit from the project despite the commenter's concern, say so!

6. Catch your breath

If you feel overwhelmed with a series of comments, especially from a single user, take a break. Post a placeholder comment that thanks the commenter and tells them you'll be back with a longer response.

Here's another great example.
